Absorption of radioactive iron by anaemic infants.

چکیده

The oral administration of iron to anaemic infants often fails to restore the haemoglobin level as rapidly as it would in an adult. The reason for this failure could be either failure of absorption or failure to utilize the iron which had been absorbed, or deposition of all the iron in the tissue stores without any being incorporated in the haemoglobin. It was therefore decided to study the absorption and utilization of iron in anaemic infants and children using tracer quantities of the isotope 59Fe administered orally.

Absorption of slow-release iron and effects of ascorbic acid in normal subjects and after partial gastrectomy.

Radiolabelled tablets of slow-release iron and ferrous sulphate containing 50 mg of elemental iron were given to 28 patients, and iron absorption was studied using a whole body counter. There was no significant difference between the absorption of ferrous sulphate and that of slow-release iron in normal subjects, anaemic patients, anaemic and non-anaemic post-gastrectomy patients, or those with ...

Iron absorption and blood loss in patients with hiatus hernia.

Iron absorption was measured in 28 patients, 19 of whom were anaemic. The mean absorption in the anaemic patients was 39% and in the non-anaemic patients 8%. Gastrointestinal blood loss was then measured in 26 of these patients. The mean estimated blood loss in the anaemic patients was 15 ml. a day and in the non-anaemic patients 3 ml. a day. In 16 of the 19 anaemic patients symptoms of anaemia...

Anaemia during pregnancy as a risk factor for iron-deficiency anaemia in infancy: a case-control study in Jordan.

BACKGROUND A high prevalence of 50-65% iron-deficiency anaemia in mothers and infants in Jordan was reported by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in 1990. Iron-deficiency in infancy has been shown to delay cognitive and psychomotor development with long-term consequences. While socioeconomic deprivation and inadequate nutrition are known underlying factors, it is unclear whethe...

Absorption of iron from maize (Zea mays L.) and soya beans (Glycine hispida Max.) in Jamaican infants.

I. The absorption of iron from 59Fe-labelled maize and soya-bean preparations was measured by whole-body counting in forty-two apparently healthy Jamaican infants and compared with thc absorption of ferrous ascorbate. 2. The mean absorption of Fe from maize u’as 4.3% and from soya beans baked at 300°, 9.4%. compared with 28.5:/0 for ferrous ascorbate. In a group of children given boiled soya be...

Effect of iron supplementation on psychomotor development of non-anaemic, exclusively or predominantly breastfed infants: a randomised, controlled trial

INTRODUCTION Uncertainty exists regarding the effects of iron supplementation during infancy on neurodevelopmental outcomes in the absence of anaemia. The aim of the study is to establish whether psychomotor and mental development is influenced by early iron supplementation in healthy, non-anaemic, exclusively or predominantly breastfed infants. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Healthy term infants will ...
